green generation

The generation of electricity by nuclear power plants saves 20 million tonnes of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions a year. This, together with supply security, means the energy generated by nuclear power plants is a strategic source to meet the decabornisation and energy transition commitments.

Generating the future

The world is facing a great challenge: the urgent need to slow down global warming and decarbonise multiple sectors of the economy as soon as possible. This goal necessarily requires abandoning the use of fossil fuels and electrifying many activities – such as thermal generation or mobility – which so far depended mainly on polluting sources of energy.

The nuclear industry is ready to accept this challenge. Several European countries, led by France, United Kingdom and Finland, are committed to increasing the nuclear power generating capacity. World powers, such as the United States and China, are also building new reactors, while the European Union has recognised nuclear power as a green energy.

Ascó NPP and Vandellós II NPP provide over half of the electricity consumed in Catalonia.

Nuclear power plants are a key element to achieve all decarbonisation goals.

Availability and price

Spain has approved a government plan to shut down the nuclear power plants that are in operation by 2035. Meanwhile, all the Spanish nuclear power plants – Almaraz I and II, Ascó I and II, Cofrentes, Trillo and Vandellós II – provide availability and price containment, more than 20% of the energy demand and savings of 20 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere a year (data from 2021). In this way, nuclear power is positioned to be a key element to reach the European Union’s decarbonisation and net-zero emissions goals for 2050. ANAV, as well as all other Spanish nuclear power plant operators, will continue to guarantee safe and reliable energy until their last day in operation.
